What is a combination boiler?

Oct 31st, 2008 | By admin | Category: property advice

Combination boilers combine the job of doing the central heating and supplying hot water. They heat water directly from the mains as you use it. This makes them energy efficient and cheap to run.

Combination boilers or “Combi’s” however do not supply heating and hot water at the same time. They are set on a hot water priority, which means if the hot water tap is running there will be no heat output to the radiators. They are ideal for small properties and are usually wall hung. They are by far the most popular boiler bought in the UK.

The combination boiler in the picture has a compact design so is perfect for confined spaces and comes with a 2 Year Manufacturer’s Parts & Labour Guarantee. It’s easy to install but remember that all gas products must be fitted by a registered Corgi installer. Click the picture for further details.

Due to the compact size of combination boilers there is one draw back, they can only supply a relatively small amount of hot water. This means if you want to install a power shower you should probably not install a combination boiler due to the amount of hot water a combi-boiler is able produce. However, to get around this you can install a separate electric shower that heats water independently.

If you are really set on having a combination boiler and consume family sized amounts of hot water then you can buy ones that store hot water independently in a tank, but these are large and need to be stored next to an outside wall. This can be expensive and finding a place to store them can be a hassle.

If you are looking to purchase a combi-boiler at trade prices for installation by a registered Corgi installer then check out Screwfix Direct. See below some of the combi-boilers on offer. They have a huge range at their site.
