Knowing which type of paint finish to use on the right surface
Oct 2nd, 2008 | By admin | Category: Featured Articles, home designChoosing the right colour is only half the battle when trying to find the right paint to decorate your home. There are several types of finish so it’s useful to know which type of paint is used for which surface and which paint goes where and why. But firstly, what is paint? Paint is basically a coating which is made with a binder, liquids, additives and pigments. It is then applied in liquid form to provide a protective layer as well as improving the appearance of the surface underneath.
GLOSS:
First off, if you want a highly reflective paint then a gloss is the one for you. It is very shiny and is the opposite of Matte paint which has a very low gloss level. It is ideal for doors, window frames and woodwork. However, if you want something a little more subtle you can go for a semi-gloss which isn’t as shiny. Before applying gloss paint it’s important that you prep the surface beforehand, because the finish will magnify any surface imperfections.
SATIN FINISH:
This paint has a gloss level between high gloss and eggshell/silk. Its appearance is smooth, velvety while quite glossy in effect. It is often used on ceilings, doors and windows. Many people use it in kids rooms for example because it is easy to wipe clean.
EGGSHELL:
Eggshell paint is generally used on wood and is ideal for window sills and skirting boards it provides a period diffused finish; this is due to its silk like appearance and slight shiny look. It is quite a flexible paint as it can also be applied to metal and plaster and is also used on walls.
MATTE PAINT:
Matte paint has little or no sheen which is the opposite to gloss paint. It is commonly used on interior walls and ceilings as well as exterior wall areas. Due to its low gloss level it is ideal for using on surfaces where you want to hide imperfections.
ENAMEL:
If you’re looking for tough dirt resistant paint then enamel is the paint for you, its ideal for kitchens and bathrooms. It has a high sheen level that’s between satin and glossy. You can also buy flat enamel that has a matte finish quality and is ideal if you want to be able to clean the surface occasionally.
EMULSION:
Emulsion is a water-based paint; it is quite a hard wearing paint that can be wiped down. It also has a low odour making it ideal for bedrooms.
