  1. Thank you for the very helpful video.

I have a dripping kitchen mixer tap which one plumber says cannot be fixed because it does not have a standard washer and another plumber has said he would find it difficult to find a replacement ceramic disc for the tap in order to repair it. They both recommend buying a new tap without a ceramic disc, but most modern good quality taps have ceramic discs, except for the very ugly ones. Also, I have grip problems in my hands due to arthritis and would prefer a lever to a turning handle. Research on the internet seems to result in a ceramic disc tap being the best option for my area where the water is hard.

Have I the right plumber do you think? Your video makes the whole thing sound so simple, but is there a chance the ceramic disc cannot be replaced easily? I am capable of DIY jobs to a reasonable standard but have never been involved in plumbing. I am prepared to have a go. Once I have removed the disc, how will I know what to buy to replace it? I have no idea how old the tap is as I have only lived in the house for 4 years.

I don’t really expect a reply, you only invite comments on your video. But my comments and questions might prove useful in making other helpful videos.

    I hope I haven’t wasted your time.

  2. Thanks Carolyn I am sorry to hear you are having problems. I agree this video is excellent and is very easy to follow. Have you thought about following the steps in the video then checking the cartridge. You may be able to replace it. If the cartridge is damaged you could take it to your local DIY store to see if you can get a replacement.

In my experience workmen will often give you advice that makes the most profit for them, i.e, putting a whole new tap on. There is nothing to lose by following the video and checking the cartridge. As you mention that one plumber has said he would find it difficult to find a replacement this means that it is not impossible and could be something said to get you to put in a new tap. I apologise for being so cynical, there must be some decent workmen out there. So give it a go and let us know how you got on, like you say any advice you can offer on your situation will help others.

  3. Had the same problem. it is usually the cold water tap in the kitchen as this is under mains pressure. Bought a standard replacement cartridge kit from B&Q (hot & coldĀ£18) & it all went well until refitting the lever when discovered the splines were different. I think I can bodge it but would not recommend it to anyone else. If you can identify the tap you might get an exact replacement from a good plumbers merchant in which case the rest of the job is quite simple. So I’m afraid the plumbers are correct but getting the right replacement is the key.
