Sep 26th, 2008 | By admin | Category: home design

When you begin interior designing start off think about the size of the space you are working with plus all the elements within the room such as the radiators, windows, electrical sockets, lights and switches. Understanding the space you are working with is very important measure everything up using a tape measure.

Draw a rough plan of the room on some paper. You should draw the plan from a bird’s eye view. Start off by drawing the walls then add in any windows, doors and radiators. Once you have got the basic plan drawn use your tape measure to measure how long the walls are starting from one corner and working your way round. You can then add these measurements to the plan you have drawn.

You should also measure the height of the room and draw this on the plan next to the corresponding wall. You should put this measurement in a circle so that you do not get mixed up with the wall lengths. Once you have all the measurements you should draw a scaled drawing of your room on some graph paper. If you search online you can find graph paper you can print it out and use it to plan your room.

Knowing the correct dimensions of the room will allow you to buy the right size furniture and the correct amount of materials to decorate the room without wastage. After you have familiarised yourself with the dimensions of the room, begin to think about what sort of space you want to create. What kind of mood and atmosphere do you want to set?

It’s important to also think practical and consider the tasks that need to be carried out in the room. What kind of storage will you need? What sort of light is there? Do you need to use light colours to make the room feel bigger or is additional lighting needed? If you need help choosing the right colour check out this article choosing the right colour.
