How to plan your bathroom design

Jul 24th, 2008 | By admin | Category: home design

When you are planning your bathroom design it should be based around functionality first and aesthetics second. This is why I suggest you draw a plan with accurate measurements of your bathroom so you can determine where everything can go; this will also provide you with all the details you need when you go to buy your bathroom fittings and fixtures.

By drawing a plan this will help you determine:
• How many wall and floor tiles you may need
• The space available for your sanitary ware
• The space available for any other fixtures you may want
• The plan should help you determine where the ventilation can go
• It will also allow you to identify how functional the bathroom will be

Another thing to keep in mind is the various delivery times. Your bathroom will be made up of different materials and products, which may have different delivery times and be from different suppliers. It’s important that you establish the order by which things will need to be done and what needs to be on site at that time. Also you will no doubt need to co-ordinate plumbers, plasterers, tilers and electricians a way around this is to use a single contractor or specialist bathroom fitter and let them co-ordinate their own people. However, this is more expensive than employing individuals but it does simplify the process.

Your drainage will determine where sink shower and bath can go
When you are planning the layout of your bathroom it is the drainage from the toilet, bath, shower and basin that will determine where everything goes. Usually you position the toilet first because of the size of the waste pipe needed and it will generally be next to an outside wall as well as being as close as possible to a downpipe this will save on costs. The position of the basin, shower and bath are easier and more flexible as these have similar sized waste pipes. I would suggest you consult with a plumber before finalising any plans.

Once you have planned your bathroom design its now time to think about your design concept.
