Most people have a small room somewhere in their house, be it a spare bedroom, bathroom or small wc. The following interior design hints and tips will help you make a small room look bigger.

The rising cost of housing and the proliferation of conversions appearing on the market, means you have to be economical with your space to make the most out of it. Small rooms can often be found in city centre housing, well, this is what I discovered when I was looking for a flat in London.

So you don’t feel cramped you need to get really organised. Make sure everything has a place clutter can make the space feel even smaller. Purchasing clever storage items can help

Shelves are another good storage idea. With things out of sight, the space you can see feels more open an will make a room look bigger.

If you want a cosy intimate space, a small room can help to give this affect. But if you want to give the appearance of somewhere larger, you can decorate to give the room a more spacious feel, without moving the walls.

The ways to achieve this are:
1. With colour
2. Furniture arranging
3. Lighting

A neat trick for opening up the space in a room is to move furniture out of the way from walkways; this will give free movement around the room and open up the space. Choose short pieces of furniture like an ottoman or a low table like this one from Dwell

Place large taller pieces along walls rather than out in the open space. The more floor you can see the larger the room will look.

Dark, warm colours can make a space feel ‘homey’. Light, cool colours make a space feel more open. This is definitely true as when I changed the dark red carpet in by small bathroom to a cream coloured marble effect the room strangely felt bigger, definitely more light and airy.

Stick to one colour scheme, use colours from the same family. Try to coordinate the wall and furniture colours. Select plain upholstery for furniture. Use texture for interest and stick to neutral tones if you can.

Any room looks larger when well-lit, either by natural light or artificial lighting. Add lamps and get rid of heavy curtains.

Another useful tip is use see through material. For a small bathroom, use a clear glass shower enclosure as opposed to an opaque one. You can also use glass tabletops.

Mirrored walls, make a room look larger we use this effect in our living room, we have a large mirror over the fireplace which makes the room feel twice the size. A mirror can reflec light and space.
Please use some of these tips and let me know how you get on.
