How to choose the right wallpaper

There’s no better way to add colour and texture to your walls all at once than by using wallpaper. Choosing the right wallpaper can also have a dramatic effect on your home and its ambience.

Before you choose your wallpaper think about how you want it to fit in with the rest of the room. Take into account the rest of the elements in the room such as decorative pieces, furniture and how the room is used. Secondly, measure up the room in detail taking into account all of the doors and calculate how many square feet of wallpaper you’ll need, more is better than less.

After you have done this you can start looking around for your wallpaper. This is a great opportunity to create a mood board. This is constructed using various fabrics and samples of designs that have caught your eye.

I suggest if you are wallpapering a living room or dining room that you use subdued warm welcoming colours. Shades of orange, peach and pinks provide a welcoming effect although not all at once. In contrast if you are decorating a kitchen or bathroom you may want to go for a more dynamic cool colour such as light blues and greens. This will make the room seem more vibrant and in some cases less confining.

Don’t be afraid to use bold designs. If you have a large room however and you want to play safe you can go for a damask design which is both elegant and distinctive. If done right you can add atmosphere and style to an otherwise large bland space.

For smaller rooms or rooms that you use less frequently use neutral plainer wallpaper. This will make the room feel less in your face and claustrophobic. If you are wallpapering a kitchen or bathroom use vinyl-coated wallpaper. This is durable stuff and it’s cheaper and easier to keep clean.
