Apr 15th, 2008 | By admin | Category: how to

If you are suffering from condensation dampness the following questions will help you to remedy the problem.

Damp caused by condensation will crop up in the following places

  • Cold corners of the room
  • Behind furniture
  • Cold surfaces such as windows
  • Inside built-in wardrobes

You may ask; how can I avoid condensation?

Reduce moisture
When you are cooking shut the kitchen door and keep saucepan lids on. Always use your cooker’s extractor fan if you have one, if you don’t have one you may want to get one fitted.

Vent tumble driers to the outside, or open the window when the machine is in use.

Avoid drying clothes inside if you have to dry them inside, use a room where you can open the window.

Shut the bathroom door when bathing / showering if you have an extractor fan in here turn it on, otherwise think about opening a window.

Raise the temperature
Condensation is most common in rooms that are difficult to keep warm.

The best way to raise the temperature of your home is to improve your heating and insulation.

There are a range of grants available for these measures so they will not cost as much as you think.
Households receiving benefits may be entitled to have the work done free of charge.

Increase ventilation
It might be tricky to increase ventilation as you need to provide ventilation without introducing too much cold air which would decrease the room temperature.

Extractor fans are a good way to do this especially in areas where you produce a lot of moisture such as the kitchen and bathroom.

You may wish to leave kitchen and bathroom windows un-draught-proofed to allow some ventilation.
You should move furniture away from outside walls will allow air to circulate behind them.

The Energy Savings Trust has published information about energy savings grants and offers. They are a non-profit organisation that provides free impartial advice tailored to suit you.

In summary in order to reduce condensation dampness you must take steps to balance the level of moisture, heat and ventilation in your home.
