General lighting in the home

General light is the most important and should illuminate the whole room. The best way to light a room in your house is to use lots of smaller lights that cover as wide an area as possible as opposed to just one large light in the middle of the room, which commonly will only light the main floor space leaving the corners and edges poorly lit.

There are lots of ways to light a room and one of the best sources of general lighting are ceiling downlighters where you can use halogens or spotlights. Check out this article to really understand how different sources of light can add atmosphere and energy to your home.

Downlighting is generally fitted in a grid format providing an evenly spread source of light. It is quite expensive to have these lights fitted in your home and a qualified electrician might have to take up the floor boards from the room above in order to a good job, however this is not always the case.

Cable-Mounted Halogen Lights
Next up cable-mounted halogen lights they are versatile and easy to install. Once you have installed them you can direct the light to different areas as you see fit. They have been around for quite some time and you’ll find lots of different styles which can add a nice touch to a room. One draw back is that the halogen lights can be quite expensive to replace in some cases.

Ceiling Mounted Pendant Lights
Ceiling mounted pendant lights are an effective means of providing light in a room when several of them are used in conjunction and spread evenly. They often hang with a lampshade of your choice providing an opportunity to use some creative freedom and can look very nice in a kitchen over a breakfast table when fitted with a long cable.

Wall Mouted Lights
Uplighters are generally wall mounted and can be used to light paintings and decorative pieces. I always think that this sort of lighting is very effective in a dining room because you can create a great atmosphere if they are fitted with a dimmer switch. You should use low voltage lights to reduce the glare and be mindful that the light will be bouncing off the surface of the wall so using a dark wall colour might not work to well, try using white or light coloured paint.

Wall mounted lights need to be fitted carefully a qualified electrician is normally called in for a job of this kind and they will need to run a cable through the wall. In order to distribute light evenly across the room you will probably need several placed around on at least a couple of walls. A benefit of this sort of lighting is that you can use energy saving lightbulbs which can reduce the running costs. But beware these lights can generate a cold blue tint, you may have take this into consideration when picking the shade for the light.
