Fixing the problem of damp walls

My bedroom started to get a problem with damp walls in the bottom corner of the wall running along the outside. It was not so bad at the beginning, when the black spots of mould appeared I bought some fungicidal mould spray that is supposed to protect and treat the affected area.

The mould went away but it looks as if the damage was done. The wallpaper remained pretty wet. I tried airing the room, which has double glazing but it looks as if the damp has run pretty deep. I even tried using my hairdryer to dry the walls.

Last weekend I went about trying to clean the mould off the wall again but the wallpaper was peeling off the walls so I started to peel it off. It came off really easily as it was so wet. The wall behind it is wet starting in the corner and rising up and out a little so I have removed the wallpaper until the wall is dry I have treated it with the mould spray and I am leaving it to dry before I decide what to do next.

My bedroom is now a bit of an eyesore as the wall paper has been peeled away from the damp corner and out along behind the bed but at least the damp smell seems to be dissipating.

I have bought a dehumidifier which helps immensely to get rid of the excess moisture in the air. A dehumidifier is a household appliance that reduces the level of humidity in the air. I recommend that you get a decent dehumidifier as the small ones fill up far too easily. Larger dehumidifiers can be left on all day when you go out and need emptying less often.

I have now figured out that the damp is down to condensation and there are the steps that should be taken to prevent this from happening. Check out the article on diagnosing dampness for some additional info.
