How to Diagnose Different Types of Damp
Jul 27th, 2008 | By admin | Category: how toThere are a few different types of dampness and each type of damp will have its own resolution. This information will help you to diagnose which type of damp you have.
Below you will find a list of the different types of dampness you may find in your home:
Condensation dampness
Condensation is moisture held in the air, this type of dampness will affect rooms where a lot of moisture is being produced. Typically you will find this form of condensation in the kitchen or bathroom. The condensation settles on cold surfaces and this is when you can get black mould. Check out the condensation dampness article to discover solutions for this problem.
Rising damp
With rising damp the problem is caused by moisture rising up the wall from the ground below. This only occurs on ground floor walls. The way to identify if you have rising damp is to check for a tidemark up to 1 metre above the ground. The most usual treatment for rising damp is to install or repair the damp proof course.
Rain penetration
Damp may be a result of rain penetration caused by a defect in the outside wall which allows moisture to seep through. You can identify whether this type of damp is the reason of your problem because it will become worse in wet weather. The resolution to this problem is to repair the wall and check to see that no guttering or drain pipes are leaking.
Plumbing problems
If you spring a leak over a period of time it will lead to a patch of dampness close to the source of the leak. Fixing the leak should solve the problem. You may need to redecorate the area if any visual damage has occurred.
