Carpet for your home is money well spent if you know where to buy it

As you may have read in my recent blog post How to deal with noisy neighbours we have been blessed with noisy neighbours, I know, lucky us, right. So to cut a long story short we are soundproofing the living room. We have bought chip board and special soundproofing underlay called Acoustilay and our new carpet has been fitted. Check out the article Soundproofing your floor at home.

I wanted to write a piece on buying a carpet because I was surprised by how many different kinds of carpet there are and the sheer amount of deals on offer. It seems these places have sales on all year round so I was a bit suspicious as to whether we were actually getting a sale price at all or if the original RRP was an inflated price, which was immediately brought, down to some how trick the unsuspecting customer. Anyway, we went to a local retail park near to where we live, which has an Allied carpets and Carpetright opposite each other, which is convenient.

We initially went to Allied because they currently have a free fitting offer when you purchase a premium underlay. This sounded like a good offer at first until we found out the underlay was going to cost £8.99 per square metre and I had already done research online and found similar quality underlay for only £3.00 per square metre. On top of this the offer only applied to carpets that were priced around £20.00 per square metre which was a little over our budget. Don’t get me wrong the quality of the carpets and the service were good but if you are on a tight budget like us the offer may not be for you.

So we decided to go over to Carpetright and give them the quote we received from Allied minus another £25.00 just for good measure. They were very obliging and keen to give us a good deal plus the service was also good. So in the end we got a cheap carpet, underlay, fitting and delivery for £310.00. What I did find good value is that the fitting was only £43.00, I expected to pay double that.
So my advice to you is if you want to buy a carpet do your research online first, then go to a couple of stores to check the quality of the carpet you like. If you prefer to buy in store get a quote from a couple of places and get them to compete for your business and also when they give you the quote get them to break it down so you can see how you are going to be charged.

I hope this helps and good luck!
